Unfortunately we had $200 worth in gift cards and the owner abruptly closed the restaurant. When we requested a refund he basically said he was going to open up another restaurant and we'd have to wait for the new restaurant to open. Given that it will be a different style of restaurant and the opening date is unknown I feel the owner should have either refunded the money or given us more notice of the closing so we could have used our gift cards.

Not sure how they call them apple fritters, they are large but there were no apples. Like what!!!!!
Well that shouldn’t happen. Sorry about that. Tell us this happened next time you are in the store and we can make it up to you.

This place went from 5 stars to 1. The five: I was pleasantly surprised when my friends greeted me with a box of vegan donuts from their neighborhood. They were delicious! I had been waiting to try them again and finally picked a day I could get to Alexandria again.
The one: I checked their site overnight to see if I could have a preview of what donuts would be available that morning. I was excited to see that I could pick a time for pickup and order right then. That afternoon, right around my pickup time I got a call. I asked my brother to call them back because I was trying to keep it a surprise from the people i was in the car with. The person said that they were sold out for the day and I could either get a refund or come back another day…
1. What happened to my order? 2. I live almost an hour away! 3. Don't take online orders if you can't fulfill them!
I was furious. What if it was for a big event? I'd already traveled an hour. I got ZERO donuts. The person also said that they missed the order but couldn't do anything about it. How incompetent! So my brother told them to expect a call from me.
I called AND emailed and guess what? No one ever got back to me. No apology, no gesture to make it right, nothing. They did refund me. But this kind of mistake warrants more that. Not impressed at all with their customer service or protocols. How hard is it to fill an online order? Isn't everyone doing that these days? And if you mess up, fix it! Not a good impression of a business I had been so thrilled about.
UPDATE: I wrote this and they replied. Suddenly I had value as a customer once I publicly talked about this. I had emailed them prior to writing a review and gotten no response. So I did email them again, as they requested, and I've heard nothing since!… – show

I have been visiting Elizabeth’s Counter since late 2020. I fell in love immediately with the customer service and menu options. So why am I leaving a 2 star review? It seems within the last 6 months things, possibly management, have changed. Hours are very strange (offer lunch options but stop serving food at 1:45pm. Even though closing is at 2pm), donut options have declined (flavor options and quality. Had the driest apple fritter to date a week ago. Let’s not mention the sugar overload in some options.), and customer service has take a hit.
Hopefully Elizabeth’s can turn back to what it was a year ago. Unfortunately, we will not be visiting twice a week like we have in the past.… – show
Thank you for sharing this feedback. We are not sure why you had a bad experience with the fritter. We are going to look into that. We are sorry about that. Our hours are 7am to 2 pm because we had so few orders after 2 pm that we were spending more on staff than we were making and that was tough for our business model. We try to make sure our staff is paid well but that does impact things. We’d love to be open more, but we need to see more vegan food lovers coming to the spot before we can try that again. We are just a small business trying to make ends meet every month.… – show

Vegan or not…DELICIOUS donuts! Omg…so moist and flavorful!
Thank you for your comments. We have had a conversation with our staff about this. We always strive to provide great service, but we are human and sometimes have bad days like everyone.

This review is strictly about the customer service, not the food, at Elizabeth’s Counter. I stopped in this morning to get a decaf chai latte, which I have gotten from there before, and is still on the online order menu as I write this review.
When ordering this drink there today, the staff told me that they do not have decaf chai, and that the chai they have is pre-mixed. I said unfortunately I cannot have that as I am pregnant and can’t have caffeine and proceeded to leave. As I was leaving the staff shouted at me, other items I can’t have/do as a pregnant woman, to include, “trampoline, raw fish, soft cheeses.” This was completely unnecessary and uncalled for, to antagonize/shame a pregnant woman trying to order a decaf drink from an establishment in 2022. Needless to say I will not be frequenting Elizabeth’s Counter in the future.… – show
Thank you for sharing this with us. We are very sorry for this as is the person who spoke to you. We have taken corrective action and are confident it won’t happen again.

My family and I have been customers here since it was sugar shack. My kids love the donuts and fries. We used to come here all the time but lately whenever we come here they never have any donuts in stock. We tried again today and it will be our last time ever coming here again. We were having a bit of a rough day so decided to get some donuts and food. They were out of all donuts so we decided to just order from the menu. We stood in front of the two workers looking at the menu for a while and when I looked back down at them I saw them exchanging really rude glances that were very obviously about us. As I kept looking at them that’s when one of the workers finally said that the kitchen is actually going to be closed. It was only 2pm so we were confused but just said okay and left. When I looked at the hours later I saw that they’ve changed to 7am - 2pm. Instead of exchanging rude glances they could have just let us know as soon as we walked in that they were closed/closing soon and were out of donuts. I always tell my kids to spread kindness to everybody they meet because you never know what anyone is going through and your kindness could be what changes their day and this was unfortunately a good example of just how peoples rudeness can make you feel worse when you’re already having a rough day. We won’t be returning or recommending.… – show

I was able to try their food once when the hours of operations were normal; however, lately I can never get to the shop in enough time. They are always closed and the hours of operations are not conducive for anyone that is working. Doesn’t seem very customer friendly.
Thanks for your comments about our hours. We are open 7 am to 2pm for breakfast and lunch. I’m sorry those hours don’t work for you. We will certainly keep your thoughts in mind as we evaluate the business. Please consider trying us on the weekend if you can. We hope to see you soon.

I have been a customer of theirs ever since it was named a Sugar Shack, they have the best donuts! What makes me upset is that they are always out of stock.. like no matter what time of the day.. the last few times we went they were out of staple donuts such as glazed, cinnamon, sprinkled, etc.. I truly don’t get it! We drove all the way from DC just for donuts.. I should have known better!

Some considerations need to be made about this.
